(9 May 2017) Cuba has opened its first luxury mall since the 1959 Revolution, a high-end complex located just off a picturesque central square in historic Havana, attracting locals and tourists to its brand name shops.
It is a startling display of conspicuous capitalism in the heart of old Havana filled with stores selling some of the world's premier luxury brands.
But few local shoppers can afford the expensive wares on display.
The store clerks make less than 30 US dollars a month, as do the Cubans gathered before displays of 5,000 dollar watches, 3,000 dollar pens and 40 dollar jars of green-tea facial cream.
A few blocks away, working-class Cubans live in decaying apartments on streets clogged by uncollected trash.
